Four M.2 slots is the number that makes the B850 Tomahawk MAX worth a close look. Two of those slots run PCIe 5.0, the main graphics slot is PCIe 5.0 x16, and MSI pairs them with Wi-Fi 7 and 5GbE networking. That is a lot of future-facing hardware for a midrange board, and it is why this earns the top spot here.
The parts we appreciated most during setup are the small ones: the EZ PCIe release button, tool-free M.2 heatsinks, and a BIOS that lays out fan and memory settings without hunting. The 14-duet, 80A power stages are more than a typical Ryzen 7 build needs, which leaves headroom if you move up to a high-core CPU later.
Where this board makes the most sense is a build that will grow: a fast boot drive now, more NVMe storage later, and a 5GbE connection when the network catches up. The four M.2 slots leave that room without add-in cards. That is more useful than another row of decorative heatsinks.
Pros
- Four M.2 slots, two with PCIe 5.0
- PCIe 5.0 x16 and 5GbE networking
- 14+2+2 80A power delivery
- Tool-free M.2 and EZ PCIe release
Cons
No notable drawbacks to flag.
For most AM5 builds, this is the board we recommend: four M.2 slots, PCIe 5.0, and 5GbE without flagship pricing.
