A space heater in a child's room has to do two jobs at once: warm the room and convince you it is safe to leave running. The DREO 319 is the one here that handles both with the least fuss. Its safety package includes a child lock, tip-over and overheat shutoff, and flame-retardant materials, and it is ETL listed. We especially appreciate the child lock, because it stops small fingers from changing the set temperature when the heater is on the floor.
The thermostat is the feature we came back to. You can set it from 41 to 95 degrees in one-degree steps, which is more precise than the five-degree jumps on some tower heaters. In a bedroom, that precision matters: the heater cycles on and off around the set point instead of swinging between too hot and too cold. The 70-degree oscillation also helps spread warmth across the foot of a bed or a desk, and the 12-hour timer means you can set it before sleep without leaving it running indefinitely.
At roughly 15 inches tall and about four pounds, it fits on a tabletop or the floor, and the remote makes it easy to adjust from across the room. We used it in a home office and liked that the fan noise faded into the background rather than competing with calls. Its 6.77-inch square footprint is small enough to tuck beside a dresser, which is the detail that makes it easy to keep in a small room.
Pros
- Precise one-degree thermostat
- Child lock plus tip-over and overheat protection
- Quiet 70-degree oscillating heat
- Compact 14.65-inch tower
Cons
- Coverage tops out at 200 square feet
For most bedrooms and home offices, this is the space heater we recommend: quiet 1500W heat, a precise thermostat, and a child lock that makes it easier to live with.
