Some solar strings are decoration that happens to glow; this one is trying to be an actual light fixture. Twelve S14 bulbs over 27 feet, set 20 inches apart at 3000K, and the effect is close enough to a dimmed incandescent that nobody asks why the patio is not wired. We like it best on a pergola or a fence line, where the bulbs themselves are part of the look rather than a strip of sparkle hidden in a shrub.
Mounting is where it earns its keep. The panel detaches from the strand and ships with a stake and a clip, so the charging side can sit out in the open where the sun lands while the bulbs hang under a roof, which is the arrangement most porches actually need. Hanging the strand is a hook-and-go job: no wiring, no controller to program, no second panel to place if you only want one run.
What it will not do is flood the yard. On a full day of sun we got a soft, even wash that makes a table look good and faces look better, but it is not light to read by, and a run of gray days shows up as an earlier bedtime for the strand. If controlling either of those matters to you, the Brightown remote set further down this page is the one to look at.
The IPX4 rating is worth understanding before you choose a spot. It handles rain from any direction but it is not sealed against a jet or a soak, and the sockets are the vulnerable point. Under a porch roof, along a sheltered wall, or anywhere the strand is not sitting in wet ground, that is plenty. Strung across open lawn through a wet winter, spend the difference on an IP65 set.
Pros
- Shatterproof Edison bulbs that look like real fixtures
- Panel stakes, clips, or hangs away from the bulbs
- Warm 3000K glow that flatters a patio
- No outlet, no wiring, no electrician
Cons
- Soft output, more ambiance than task light
- Runtime shrinks after several gray days
Twenty-seven feet of shatterproof Edison bulbs and a panel you can stake, clip, or hang: this is the set we point people to first for a patio with no outlet in reach.
