There is a small wheel set into the switch panel of these lights that moves output anywhere between 10 and 40 lumens, and it is the reason they are our top pick. Nothing else in this group lets you dial the light level. Turned down, the fixture traces the edge of a bed without throwing a white pool across the lawn; turned up, the same light reaches over a driveway apron. That control is worth paying for, and it is the first thing we missed when we went back to fixed-output lights.
The housing backs it up. Stainless steel, glass shades, pointed aluminum stakes: this is the most substantial build in this group, and the only one that feels like a fixture rather than a stake with a head on it. We ran ours along a front walk over heavy clay, and the stakes went in with a firm push where the all-plastic sets needed a starter hole and a wiggle. By daylight they look like something a landscaper installed.
A 2.4-inch square monocrystalline panel sits on top and charges through an ordinary day. Ours live at the low end most nights, which is bright enough to read the path edge and easier on the cell; on the two evenings we wanted the walk obvious from the street, the top of the range did it. The batteries come out and swap, which is the difference between a fixture that lasts several seasons and one that lasts one.
Six lights is the smallest set here, so measure the run and order both boxes at once if you need them, because a second batch bought a year later may not match. Check every light on the first evening, before the stakes are buried, so a dead one is a swap rather than a dig. The 12-month warranty covers the rest. Go back to a fixed fixture after a season of these, and the glare is what you notice first.
Pros
- Dial adjusts output from 10 to 40 lumens
- Stainless steel, glass and aluminum stakes
- Replaceable batteries extend the working life
Cons
- Highest price per light in this group
The only set here you can dial down, and the best-built one: this is what we put on a front walk when the light itself matters.
