Two mounts come in the box with this light: a spring clip with a foam pad and a short flexible tripod. That sounds like padding until you have used a clip-only light on a monitor with a thick bezel, or discovered that the top center of your laptop lid is the one place you do not want a light.
We recommend it to most people because that second mount solves a problem you cannot predict from a product photo, and because the controls cover more ground than the price suggests: five color temperatures from warm to cool white, with five brightness steps on each. On a call, the difference between the warm and the daylight setting is the difference between looking lit by a table lamp and looking like you are sitting near a window.
The ring shape is doing the real work. Light arrives from a circle instead of a point, so the shadows under your eyes and nose soften rather than harden. Keep the head within about arm's length of your face, clipped at the top of the screen or standing just to one side, and what the camera sees reads as better room lighting rather than a light. The tripod earns its place there: set slightly off to the side, it gives your face some shape instead of a flat, even wash.
One thing to plan for. The dimmest setting still throws a lot of light in a dark room, so aim it at the wall behind your monitor rather than straight at your face. And if your screen is thick, curved, or glossy enough to catch the ring, the tripod half of the kit is the part you will actually use.
Pros
- Clip and flexible tripod both included
- Five color temperatures, five brightness steps
- Ring design softens shadows on camera
- USB power from a laptop or charger
Cons
- USB power only, no battery
We recommend this one to most people: a clip and a flexible tripod both come in the box, and five color temperatures make matching your room's light easy.
