The Dawn Pro 2 gets the basics right: a compact aluminum body, both 3.5mm and 4.4mm outputs, and a 100-step volume control that lets us leave the phone's volume alone. That combination is why it is our top pick for a daily carry dongle. It covers IEMs and efficient headphones without asking you to carry a battery, and the metal housing feels more expensive than the rest of the kit.
The dual CS43198 chips and 32-bit/384kHz decoding are more than most phone listeners need, but the app-based parametric EQ is the feature we kept coming back to. It lets you save a correction curve or a bass shelf to the device rather than hunting through a music app, and the 100-step volume control separates device volume from the phone. For a dongle this small, that is a lot of control.
With 124mW on tap, the Dawn is at its best with IEMs and efficient over-ears; the 4.4mm jack gives balanced cables a connection the phone's own output does not have. Against the KA15 and Protocol Max, it is the smaller, simpler option with less headroom, and that is the trade most phone listeners can live with. If you own planars, look at the Protocol Max instead.
Pros
- Both 3.5mm and 4.4mm outputs
- 100-step volume control
- App-based parametric EQ
- Compact aluminum housing
Cons
- EQ setup requires the Moondrop app
The Dawn Pro 2 is our default portable DAC because it covers both headphone jacks, fits in a pocket, and adds useful EQ without making you pay for a battery.
