The TS6520 earns a permanent place on a small desk in a way none of the portables here can: it prints, scans, and copies, it measures about 14 inches square and 6.7 inches tall, and it costs less than the travel printers that only print. In a home office squeezed into the corner of a living room, that is the whole argument in one box.
The flatbed scanner is what makes it useful rather than merely capable. A flatbed swallows a passport, a signed lease, or a page torn out of a book without a feeder to jam, and the automatic two-sided printing that comes with it is the feature we missed most on the cheaper machines here — the TR160 and both inkless printers turn pages over by hand. Canon rates it at 14 black-and-white and 9 color pages a minute, but the number a household actually feels is the first page, which lands in about eight seconds.
Wireless is the part to set up deliberately. The TS6520 can join a 5 GHz network as well as 2.4 GHz, which heads off most of the dropped-connection trouble compact printers get into, and when pairing does misbehave, the USB port is a straight fallback. At 15.4 pounds it is the heaviest desktop machine in this group, so pick a shelf for it rather than planning to carry it between rooms.
Pros
- Print, scan, and copy in a compact body
- Automatic two-sided printing
- Dual-band Wi-Fi with a wired fallback
- Setup that usually goes right the first time
Cons
- Tri-color cartridge makes color ink the recurring cost
Our default compact printer for a home office: it prints, scans, and copies with automatic two-sided printing, and it does it for less than the travel machines that only print.
