The low-odor ABS formulation is the first thing we notice about Polymaker's black spool, and it is the reason this is our default pick for functional parts. The 1.75 mm filament is wound on a 1 kg spool with a ±0.03 mm dimensional tolerance, and Polymaker builds it for heat resistance and impact strength rather than decorative prints. We like that combination because it matches what most people actually want from ABS: a part that survives a hot enclosure, a dropped tool, or a snug mechanical fit without turning into a warped conversation piece.
Printing it is still ABS printing. Polymaker calls for a 245–265°C nozzle, a 90–100°C bed, and the cooling fan off, and an enclosure is the sensible way to hold those conditions. We paid close attention to bed adhesion because that is where ABS spools separate; this one rewards a clean, hot surface and a brim on tall parts. The black color is the right kind of boring for brackets, jigs, and replacement parts.
The ±0.03 mm tolerance is the detail we appreciate most when two printed pieces have to mate, and black is the one we keep on the shelf for that reason. Polymaker sells enough colors to make the spool useful beyond utility prints, but the tight fit is what earns it the default spot.
Pros
- Low-odor ABS resin
- ±0.03 mm dimensional tolerance
- Heat- and impact-resistant parts
- Standard 1 kg spool
Cons
- Spool can tangle if tension slackens
- Not the lowest-cost spool
For most ABS buyers, this is the spool we recommend first: a low-odor, dimensionally consistent 1 kg roll that handles heat and impact without demanding special handling beyond the enclosure ABS already needs.
